A fine antique silver plated Spirit Kettle with an ebony handle and finial. The kettle is in fine condition, one of the best examples that we have seen, it was manufactured by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield around the mid to late 1920's. The legs and handle show the curves and natural influence typical of the Arts and Crafts movement whilst the body and particularly the lid shout Art Deco, a lovely fusion of the two major design influences of the early 20th century. The base of the kettle has the James Dixon hallmark with their Trumpet and Banner mark, this mark was registered in 1879 and used until 1938. The burner has a lever which can be turned to open and later extinguish the flame by moving the concave lid in and out of place, the companion lever raises or lowers the burner, the base the burner is stamped with "Patent No 17065" and so this was a piece of technology which they considered important enough to protect.
The kettle and stand together measure 28cm (11") in height.
James Dixon & Sons was founded in 1806 in Sheffield becoming a major manufacturer of silver, silver plate and pewter products during the industrial revolution.
