A rare Dental Scaler by J. D. Chevalier & Sons dating from around 1860. The tool is steel and bears the makers name, the ferrule is gold plated brass or possibly gold, Chevalier is known to have used both, and the handle is made from Cypraecassis Ruffa, the shell of a large sea snail. The Scaler measures 15cm (6") in length.

This is an extremely rare and high quality item, very few were ever made and it is inconceivable to imagine that a functional tool such as this would ever be made to this quality standard after the 19th century.

John D. Chevalier was Swiss by birth but ran his business in New York from 1833, he had, as part of his business strategy, the idea to sell quite extravagant and beautiful dental tools to make his mark in the rapidly expanding dental market in America at that time.
