Antique Gladstone bag handbag in crocodile with brass locks and fittings. This is a beautifully proportioned fine quality bag having brass lock, closures and key and with a moiré silk interior and inner purse pockets. The interior is hinged at both sides to keep it open to a rectangular shape when open, the lining with some marks and wear. The exterior leather is in good condition and nicely aged.
The Gladstone Bag is named after the British Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, and is often mistaken for the doctor's bag. This lovely small example would have belonged to a rather well-to-do lady where luxurious luggage and accessories were simply essential for those who moved in high circles. Dating from around 1920.
The bag stands 16cm (6.3") high (without the handle) and measures 32cm (12.6") across the base.
